“What you talking about darlin’?”
“I can’t stay but you need to get out of here. It’s not safe. We never have guests unless….”
“Unless what?” What the fuck did he get himself into?
“Unless it’s one of them…you know?” She fidgeted with her hands.
“What are you doing here? You family?” She obviously wasn’t a vampire. She couldn’t even called them what they were, vampires.
“I have to go..please sir…please get out of here as soon as possible and don’t bring your friend here.”
“Please call me Richie. Hey! You cant tell me all this crap and then run out on me! Ksenia!” She didn’t look at him as she closed the door.
Not satisfied with her cryptic ramblings, he ripped the door open, dragged her back, her shocked squeal lost in his chest as she hit rock hard male chest.
“There is just too much shit going on right now. I don’t know who to trust and what to make of all this creepy shit. Now you come and blabber a couple of incoherent sentences and I must just let you go?”
The fear in her eyes cleared his mind a bit and he soothed her with large hands, stroking the shining, silky tresses.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to sound harsh. I’m thankful for the warning but darling I need to know what I’m letting myself in for.”
“I cannot say too much, please understand. Stay in your room tonight. Don’t wander through the house and….and…just stay in here. You will be safe. Tomorrow you make an excuse, telling him you’ve decided to bring your friend and leave. Forget this place ever existed. I know I’m a stranger but sir, you need to trust me on this. Your friend might die if you bring him here. The professor is not what he appears to be. Your friend needs to accept his fate and live his life. I must go now!”
His hands fell lifeless to his sides. The fear and urgency of the girl was outrageously terrifying!
“Goodnight..and thanks honey.”
~~~
“You took your time showing our guest his room….” The chilling, cruel look in his eyes made the girl’s heart pound violently.
“I’m sorry professor. He was so excited about his friend coming here. He told me he might leave tomorrow to tell his friend the good news.” Her quivering lips drew his cold eyes to them.
“You haven’t maybe been telling him about how we do things, have you?”
He stepped closer and she did all she could not to cringe in fear.
“No..no professor. I will never betray your trust!” lifting her face, she forced herself to hold his stare.
His hand lifted up, brushing the soft skin on her cheek.
“That’s my girl. You know what would happen if you ever betray my trust don’t you sweet child?”
She was at a loss for words but she nodded.
He took her arm in his and led her away, his authorative , yet monotonous voice trying to lull her in a false sense of security.
“We have work to do. When was the last time you fed someone?”
“Three days ago professor.”
“Are you up to it tonight?”
“Yes professor.” Her voice sounded lifeless to Richie’s eavesdropping ears.
Waiting until the house was gravely silent, Richie sneaked out his room, skulking towards the direction the two people disappeared to.
A door led towards the cellar and for a moment he wanted to throw in the towel and leave but an unseen force prompted him to go down.
Richie could feel his heart beating in his ears. The girl’s earnest warnings played over and over in his mind as he descended step for painstakingly slow step.
Fuck! If I don’t break my neck on these dark steps tonight!
It seemed as if it would go on forever! Keeping his hands in front of him as to prevent him walking into something, he felt his knuckles brush against a wooden door.
Testing the knob, he felt it twist freely under his palm. Taking a deep breath, he turned and walked forward.
Thanking the gods that the door swung open silently, he saw the door open into a room filled with boxes and rows of filing cabinets. A dimly lit light paved the way to yet another door, this time a steel one.
Whatever this man was researching, he sure as hell made sure to keep prying eyes out!
A bone chilling scream assaulted his ears and Richie lunged backwards in horror.
What the fuck?!!!
He heard the professor shout something incoherently in Russian, another blood curling shout and suddenly an eerie silence.
Richie stood transfixed in the middle of the room. His mind was screaming at him to turn back and head for his room, or even the hell out of the house but his human nature wanted to see what was behind the door.
He heard hurried footsteps coming his way and leaped behind a cabinet, scrunching himself in as tight a ball as his 6’2” frame would allow.
The professor’s voice filled the air as he mumbled to himself, now in German. The wooden door rattled as the professor slammed it violently as he rushed out, giving Richie just enough time to slip through the steel door before it sealed shut.
Rows and rows of what seemed like prison cells ran down as far as Richie could see. He snorted as he looked around.
What was it with this professor and darkness. Hell!! Didn’t he even heard of 100W globes for God’ s sake?!
Closing his eyes for a few moments, breathing in deeply, he gave his eyes time to adjust to the light.
Turning towards his left, he peeked into the cell but found nothing. He felt his hair raise as the outline of a toilet, a wooden chair and desk and a narrow little bed loomed before him.
Did he actually keep people in here?!
A sound drew his attention, it was something between a gurgling and a howling sound. Whatever it was, was in pain, he could tell.
The smell of disinfectant and…blood? Filled the air and made Richie think of a hospital, only it lacked personnel, bright colored hospital rooms and damn lights!
He followed the sound, it was getting fainter and more pitiful.
On the bed was a form of a human, distinguishable on the bed, only it was pathetically thin and swaying as it cradled its stomach.
“Are you ok?”
The moaning grew silent and the pathetic sack of bones slid from the bed, moving towards Richie. He was hunching over, his feet dragging on the floor.
Suddenly he lost his balance and tipped forward grabbing at the steel bars.
The dim light glittered on the man and Richie let out a shocked cry.
