Jon had calmed down quite considerably after Chimala’s visit. He was still not acting lucid and at times his thirst threatened to put the guys’ lives in danger.
Not having the strength to go out to feed, he had accepted the animal blood Chimala had managed to find him. The first few feeds were met with a gagging and resistance but he soon settled when the warm red liquid spilled into his mouth.
Richie was getting restless, he haven’t heard anything from Chimala since she walked out the hotelroom two days before.
Although Jon was more settled, he wasn’t fooled by the excessive sweating and pitifull grunting as Jon tossed around in his bed, grabbing his torso. It seemed that the poison had spread to the rest of his body, he was sometimes hunched into a fetal position, snarling, seeming to fight the invisible trespasser within.
Just as the sun went down on the third day there was a knock.
Looking at each other in silent question, Richie jumped up.
There she stood, wild red hair and copper eyes, a bag slung over her left shoulder.
“Well HELL!! You said two days..its day three!”
“Hello to you to handsome. Missed me?” She could set a man’s mind to murder with her wiles! He gritted his teeth and showed her in, trying to smile but the sneer was evident.
“So I take it Jonny boy is still alive?”
“You can thank the stars he is; otherwise you would have been ash already.”
Richie blinked and the next moment she was nose to nose with him. He gasped in horror and stepped back hastily.
A long painted nail tapped on his chest, her smile making his hair stand on end.
“Sometimes I think you forget I’m a vampire, luckily I have patience otherwise you would have been supper a long time ago. I didn’t stay away so long on purpose, you don’t have an idea how difficult is to get the Du La Cross. I can’t just walk up to the elders and matter of factly state that I want it because I turned someone and didn’t teach him what he needed to know…I could end up on the stake you know… Now treat me nice or I wont play anymore ok?” She stood on tiptoe and her lips meshed with his for a moment. She inhaled deeply.“Have anyone told you, you smelled divine? And I wasn’t talking about your aftershave.” She winked and disappeared into the bedroom where she was met with relieved and thankful men.
She assessed Jon’s condition and grimaced. He wouldn’t last another day.
Turning to meet their watch full gazes she said tightly.
“We need to do this tonight, he won’t last another night of this. Look here, see? His skin is turning a purplish color. The venom has been in his system too long.”
They nodded.
“Did you get the incense and the church?”
David reached into a tiny paperbag next to the bed.
“Is this it?” She opened the package and nodded.
“I found a church a few blocks away. I just don’t know how we’ll get him there.” Obie nodded towards Jon.
“Just make sure you are all there, I’ll take care of him. We’ll follow you…”
“Its one of those vampire voodoo shit huh?” Tico offered through a hazy curtain of smoke.
Shrugging her shoulders she smiled.
“Something like that.”
“So you all ready? Let’s get this over with.” She stood up and handed Richie the bag.
“Guard this with your life.”
Bending down she slumped the dead weight of the unconscious man over her shoulder.
“Ok are you going to stare at me or are you going to get your asses down so we can start this?”
“She is actually going to fly with him?” David pointed.
“GO!” she giggled again, humans were so strange! She forgot how much fun they actually were…when they were still alive that is.
She was waiting for them already, keeping herself busy with her nails as they walked in.
“You drive so slowly!” She rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Well next time take us all for a little fly then ok?” David mocked.
“I might just do that…and never bring you back again.” Her flash of red eyes didn’t go down so well.
“You like to scare the shit out of us huh?” Obie accused. This vampire shit gave him the damn creeps.
“OOhhh…a little.” She giggled again. She was evil on two legs.
Jon’s sudden snarl and coiling body brought everyone back to reality.
Chimala explained what needed to be done, while storing Jon’s body, trying to sooth his ailing body.
“ We need the incense to be burned in a circle. Jon and I have to be inside that protective circle. Now listen to me and listen good..we only have tonight…whatever happens, don’t cross the circle. If you break it, its over and Jon dies.”
While the men placed the incense strategically, Chimala took the artifact out of the bag, lying it down next to the heaving Jon.
“Richie, I need your help.” He stepped closer and frowned as she handed him a rope.
“What the hell?”
“You need to tie my left hand to Jon’s right.”
“You haven’t told us what this ritual entailed….” Tico eyed the rope and the huge daggerlike cross.
“I need to pierce the dagger through my hand and Jon’s. My blood needs to blend with his and he will be cured.”
“How much blood?” Richie had a strange feeling about this.
“All of it if need be.” She threw the rope towards him.
“ALL OF IT?! But…but …you will die.” David was almost hyperventilating. He didn’t have the stomach to see someone die left alone a damn vampire. Didn’t they explode or something?! SHIT!!!
“There is a change you might die?” Richie lowered his voice, keeping his eyes on the job at hand.
“Big possibility.” She didn’t meet his gaze.
Richie felt bad that he didn’t refuse her help but they knew what it was all about, Jon.
“Thank you.”
“I’ve lived quite a while, maybe its my time to go, who knows?” she smiled but this time it wasn’t the self assured vampire he knew, she looked like a vulnerable little girl.
Without thinking he stepped forward, hugging her tiny frame to him. There was no need for words.
She broke the embrace very quickly and stepped back.
“It’s a pity you know…I’m sure you could have been a very nice meal.” Her joke belied the dark shadows in her eyes. “Ok enough with the dramatic goodbyes, let see if I can give your friend back to you.”
Richie stepped out of the circle while Tico and Obie started to light the incense.
